Over 80% of the world's population live in countries in which over 50% of their economically active people engage in food and fiber production. Amongst rapid population growth, the trend, however, is towards accelerating urbanization under amplified food insecurity. The Southern Growth Policies Board suggests that, in an age of increasing globalization, “American commercial establishments and civic institutions will need to become more adept in their dealings with foreigners… This requires better understanding of foreign cultures and languages…”

This course has been developed to offer a political economy framework for study of growth in food security, rural development, environmental management and cross-cultural experiences in developing areas of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia, and East and Central Europe for majors within the CAES and associated disciplines across campus. The course will promote participation in the Certificate of International Agriculture, the Certificate of African Studies, the Certificate of Global Studies, and similar program areas, and it will assist in extending research and outreach programs into a collaborative network with faculty at other international institutions.
